Most credit card debt is treated as general unsecured debt that is subject to complete discharge in Chapter 7 bankruptcy and only small repayment - usually less than 10 percent - in Chapter 13 bankruptcy. When the debtor receives his or her discharge under either chapter, all credit card debt that existed prior to the petition date is eliminated, except as paid under the Chapter 13 plan.

There are some situations, however, where the holder of credit card debt can object to the discharge of its claim. These include cases where the debtor's use of credit demonstrated credit card abuse, where the balances on an account were run up to an unusual extent in the period immediately prior to bankruptcy, or where the debtor resorted to fraud in order to get access to a line of credit.
